EIR TRACK HISTORY

Edmonton Int'l Raceway in Wetaskiwin was established as Sunset Speedway in 1967. The track is located within the County of Wetaskiwin, approximately 25 minutes south of Edmonton. From 1967 to 1993 the facility operated as a clay oval. In 19994, infrastructure was added, including more grandstands, concrete walls and the track was paved in the Fall of 1994.

The Members of the Wetaskiwin Stock Car Club operated Sunset Speedway from 1967 to 1994. In March of 1995 Ron and Loretta Thiering (HMS) signed a long term lease with the Club and have operated it as Sunset Speedway until the year 2005. Wanting to keep moving Motorsports ahead in the Edmonton area, HMS reached out to NASCAR to find out information on how to become an official NASCAR Sanctioned Track in Canada. After many meetings and more upgrades to the Raceway, Sunset Speedway's name was changed to Edmonton Int'l Raceway (EIR) and became the first Track in Western Canada to Sanction with NASCAR and almost 20 years later, EIR proudly displays the NASCAR Logo and continues to run as a Sanctioned Raceway.

Knowing that we wanted to host some major events at EIR, it was obvious that more grandstand seating was required. In 2021 a deal was made with the Myrtle Beach Speedway in North Carolina to purchase grandstands that they were dismantling. Ron and his crew headed to North Carolina and piece by piece dismantled bleachers from the New Myrtle Speedway and brought them up to EIR to re-assemble, piece by piece. EIR now has seating for over 5000 fans.

Moving forward, EIR secured a NASCAR Canadian Tire Series National Event in 2014 and continues to host this National Series event to this day, for the 2024 Race Season, the NASCAR Canada Series NAPA 300 will be scheduled on July 26/27. This is a Premier Motorsports Event for all of Western Canada.

EIR is very well-knowned for its NASCAR Stock Car Test Drive Experience and guests from all over the world attend this Experience from May to September every year. This Test Drive Experience is very well suited for individuals and very popular among Team Building Programs for Corporations and Businesses.

EIR continues to be a Leader in the Motorsports Industry, winning numerous yearly Tourism Awards and in 2024 was honoured by winning the Legacy Business of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce.

We look forward to many, many more years of providing excellent and quality NASCAR Racing in Western Canada!
